Default Sherriff shot 3 times, lives to tell

So there is a sheriff that lives down the block from me, I talk to him occasionally, I know his wife and they have 3 boys. Well apparently he was making a call on a vagrant squatter and the guy opens up on Bill and hits him twice and once in the Bullet proof Jacket. Here is the story, this all took place in another smaller community North of Forks about 40 miles. Its a small world, I was riding back to work after lunch and I saw several Deputy cruisers in his driveway, and I knew (hoped) he was home.

Here is the story. It comes just a few months after the murder of a Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer that lived just one street over from me. You might remember the story where the suspect was shot and killed near the Seven Cedars Casino just North of Sequim Wa. This hits home again.

SEATTLE -- The Clallam County sheriff's deputy who was shot on Monday while trying to take into custody a trespassing suspect between Sekiu and Neah Bay has been released from the hospital.

Dep. Bill Cortani was released on Tuesday after being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Cortani, an 18-year-old veteran of the department, was shot in the hip and leg.

The incident began when the deputy responded to a trespassing call near Ray's Grocery on SR112 near milepost 7 after the man was reportedly seen inside a vacant beach cabin.

"Our neighbor had called us and said someone had come up and he was staying in the house," said Sue Sperline, the owner of the home.

When Cortani arrived on the scene, he quickly learned the alleged trespasser was not going to cooperate.

"No, the deputy tried everything he could with verbal commands, but he was just not hearing it. And then he went for a gun and started firing at our deputy," said Undersheriff Ron Peregrin.

Investigators said Scott L. Davis, 59, of Silverdale shot the deputy with a handgun, hitting him at least twice. Davis then pulled out a double-barrel, 12-gauge shotgun from his car and opened fire again. Cortani, who was wearing a protective vest, returned fire and hit Davis.

Cortani then held Davis at gunpoint for half an hour until a sergeant and two wildlife officers arrived to assist.

Both men were flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Davis, in critical condition, was taken to surgery Monday night, a Harborview nursing supervisor said. It was not known when he would be released from the hospital.

Cortani, 41, is a Forks resident.

The Washington State Patrol is handling the investigation in partnership with the sheriff's office.

Those darn squaters have been a pain in the *** since the gold rush days! Now they are shooting our officers.....WTF, for squating no less. The dude probably had too much Thunderbird wine in him or something!
