Actually With RFID tech it wouldn't be that expensive. It wouldnt be a fully fuctional GPS unit, just a simple transmitter. It would be great the first day they flip the switch and start sending speeding tickets for going 500mph in an airplane.

That being said, I do have to side with the skeptics here, the link you provided is nowhere near a valid source for a citation. If you can find more reliable info, I would be glad to drive to D.C. and join the riots that would occur if this law passed.
Is that the size of a driver's lic. Cost would kill this for sure. Like I said before the Cost of tracking all the pedophiles may kill that one.

Good point about the planes LOL

ok here is the best i can do with proving this to the non believers!

California: Under the federal Real ID Act, California's 23 million licensed drivers will have to submit to more stringent identification requirements once renewal notices appear in mailboxes starting in May 2008. Links to full story Cali full story.

Virginia: Testimony Before the Virginia Legislature on House Joint Resolution 162, Considering the Creation of Smart Driver's Licenses
Virginia full story

The list goes on and on just do a google search.. heres one from the makers of 3M. this link shows what contracts 3M has
secured. 3M contracts

Im not trying to cause an agument here, the real problem does not lye with our government, but the people of America who go through life with blinders on. Letting your government slowly take control of your life. Wake up! do something now to save yourself.

Someone stated about in a earlier post reply, about flicking a switch, airplanes and speed something like that. i do admite it might be somtime before this happens, but if tracking devices can track your speed? what makes you think they can track your altitude?
My personal GPS unit not only tracks your speed but with a flick of a switch, i can use my GPS on the water, another switch for piloting a plane. Catch up here!

ITS CALLED THE FEDERAL REAL ID ACT

CNET News: Congress made the Real ID Act voluntary – at least technically. But the punishment for not accepting the guidelines will be severe. Licenses issued by states that do not comply will not be recognized as identification to board airplanes, open bank accounts or enter Social Security offices.

Also by June of 2008 i expect appologies from all of you who didnt research for the truth.. LOL

Someone mentioned budget? read the first post about intrest you pay on on homes. never mind taxes on your wages, ps if my math is correct you can earn 65,000 a year for every million dollars you have in the bank.

here some more for your budget thing
"Local, state, and federal governments
spent a combined total of 60.6 billion dollars on law enforcement.
Federal law enforcement expenditures ranked last in absolute dollars
and accounted for only a sixth percent of all federal spending.
By way of comparison, the federal government spent 24 million more on
space exploration and 43 TIMES more on national defense and
international relations than on law enforcement."

that equals. 2605.8 billion dollars on defens alone. and that was 10 to 15 years ago.

Also by June of 2008 i expect appologies from all of you sat on your ***** and didnt research for the truth.. LOL
I will also appologize if this does not happen, but i doubt my words will have to be eaten.

To accurately display altitude for use with an aircraft you will need a device much too large for a drivers license, which must be capable of calculating time difference from over 5 different satillites to hundredths of a nano second, and in order to use this technology in an aircraft the FAA also requires a ground based GPS transmitter, which i dont believe they have implemented yet. Either way the aircraft I fly have Garmin 430's which cost around $10,000 each and are about the size of a car stereo. And they can't track altitude.

If they do end up tagging DL's the only way it could be cost and size effective would be to use the RFID system, which basically transmits a low strength homing signal. This system is currently in use at Wal-Mart to track the location of every box shipped from their warehouses (thats alot of boxes). Anyway if they do decide to do this I fear that my drivers license may be accidentally damaged within the first week.

just checked out the real ID act

"The Real ID Act signed into law in 2005 requires driver's licenses to display citizenship status starting in 2008. This measure was recommended by the bipartisan Carter-Baker Commission on Election Reform. FEIA follows this law.......The purpose of this legislation is to stop voter fraud and to ensure the integrity of the voting process. There is no way of knowing how many illegal aliens vote now, but when they move to another address and re-register, under this bill, they will have to certify citizenship."
