A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of two men on su****ion of assault with a deadly weapon.
Hai Thanh Tran, 18, of Elk Grove, and Trong Huy Vy Cao, 21, of Sacramento, were stopped by Auburn Police officers for a traffic violation Monday night around 8:15 p.m. on Highway 49 at Interstate 80.
Their description matched that of two individuals reportedly involved in an assault earlier in the day, officials said.
Tran and Cao were negotiating the sale of a motorcycle at the College Way residence of Levi Ward.
Cao wanted to test-drive the motorcycle and Ward asked to hold onto the cash to ensure the return of his motorcycle, said Lt. Scott Burns of the Auburn Police Department.
"Cao attempted to ride the motorcycle, but dropped onto the ground," Burns said. "(Ward) and Cao became involved in an argument."
Ward reportedly told the two men that he would keep the money and that the motorcycle now belonged to them.
A physical altercation followed, Burns said. Cao and Tran reportedly struck Ward in the head with the victim's aluminum flashlight and kicked him while he was on the ground, officials said.
The two suspects took the cash they had handed over for the motorcycle as well as money the victim had, officials report.
Cao and Tran are being held on $50,000 bail in the Placer County jail both charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.
Ward was treated at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital for his injuries and released.
