Did you know that clear cutting opens up feed for deer, elk, birds and many others?Did you know that there are forest practice regulations that require that all areas be re-planted withing 2 years of logging? Did you also realize that no matter who you are be it timber companies, Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources, or Joe Blow that owns 100 acres, everyone has to follow all of these rules and regulations? Sorry I don't mean to be sharp about it, but trees are just like corn or any other crop, and because it takes 60-80 years to mature, unlike food crops, even more care is taken to make sure that the harvest level stays way below the growth and rotation level.

I know it looks bad sometimes, but trust me I have seen forests grow up right around me, and fill in just like some sort of tapestry that makes this place so beautiful. There is a balance here, trust me nobody cares about the planet more than me.
Deej......you know I'm an Environmental Engineer...Right? WHO DO YOU THINK WROTE THOSE RULES AND REGULATIONS!!!!! It was people in the industry.

Clear cutting is a de****able practice that I can't believe is still tolerated in WA. Try that in Florida...and you'll get three hots and a cot.

A true forest is not a crop......selective cutting AS MOST STATES PRACTICE is fine....clear cutting is NOT AN ACCEPTABLEMANAGEMENT PRACTICE as far as 95% of the world is concerned......You guys are more back wards with your regs than China.....whom by the way is getting a lot of that wood. OK I'm off my soap box.

hmm, don't forget your key to unlock your chains to that tree while you are hugging that spotted owl FM. That owl may bite! Selective logging is ok, but you will not see vine maple growing amongst the shade. Vine maple grows out in the open more sunnier locations and makes better protection for the elk and deer. At least clear cutting is not as large of an area as it used to be and with no re planting.

edit: Thought most of the timber was shipped to Japan. Still the same though.

I'm not a tree hugger by a long shot....and I'm a fairly good shot btw and I luv to hunt. So how did vine maples, deer, elk etc get along for the last million years without our help.

I know we need wood but justifying clear cutting a SMALLER area as a reason to justify the practice is self defeating because it implies admittance that the practice is not a good thing.

China actually is getting most now days......they are going to be a power to be reckoned with in a few years.....but that topic would be for a politics section, if we had one.

Something similar has happened in the Tahoe area. Thinning is good, leaving debris from logs ie (keeping things natural) etc. When fire season came, they lost most of the trees and homes. Forest fires or logging are natural aspects. Controlling these aspects are agreed a key item.

True dat.....we do controlled burns in Florida all the time, thinning is GOOD so is selective cutting but you should burn after ya cut.

Clear cutting is still bad.

Small clear cuts around here amount to about 5% of all the timber harvested here in Washington State. But that 5% in terms of wildlife habitat and feed is huge. Also we got rid of burning slash here years ago, clean air act. Its piled up for even more wildlife habitat, Washington is greener than you think. I'm really surprised that its allowed anywhere anymore. That does more harm to the environment that any amount of clear cutting. Yes the forest floor debris debate will go on forever, but if you leave all that slash there you are just asking for trouble, maybe not next year but somewhere down the road. [sm=smiley20.gif]

I say truck the debris to the wood pellet manufactures. Although burning the slash piles aides in the soil

Actually that's a good idea, and in fact is being explored here in our industrial park. There are two exciting things happening here. There are studies right now looking into starting a pellet stove pellet mill here, that would employ people, clean up the forest and save the environment. The second one would be a wood fired clean air steam generator that would supply steam for heat and power to the major employers in town. All good stuff, it will be interesting to see what happens, my boss is heavily involved in the research and development of both projects. Maybe I should get a pellet stove now.

There now quit bugging me I DVR'd the Seahawks game and keep having to come into the bedroom to post up in here.

Deej are you saying that you think burning is bad?..... It's natural, the way nature has done it for millions of years.....the only reason controlled burns are done is because we always put out all the natural fires.......only to let undergrowth build up .... and cause a devastating fire.

Fire good....Clear Cutting Bad.....I gotta give ya a couple books to read......that were not written by lobbyist or even worst Al Gore.
