Hey all. I've got a 00 ZX9R, and it has a bad miss, all the way from idle up to about 3k. It's probably still there after 3k, I just cant feel the hesitation, or hear the miss anymore. The idle isn't smooth either. The bike has 9700 miles on it. It also makes what I believe to be the valvetrain noise i've been reading about in other posts. I reset the cam chain tensioner, and the sound didn't change. It's got brand new plugs in it, (ngk iridiums) and even the old ngk platniums looked great when they came out. I've run carb cleaner thru it, (2x) to no avail. When i start it, it doesn't want to stay running unless I choke it, even on hot days. Is this possibly something like a carbs needing synched issue, or is there some other routine fix to this type of issue. Any and all help is appreciated!!! Isaac

 

Carb sync should be done; I do mine every time I change my oil.
Also could be clogged pilot jets in the carbs. Remove carbs and the jets and make sure they ar clean. Good time to spray the hell out of them as well. My bike was doing the same and after I cleaned the pilot jets it was cured. I used striped speaker wire stands to run through the jets to make sure they were clear.

My Son's ZX9R 2001 with 4700 miles when he bought it did the same thing you have described. I also thought the piliot jets were clogged. I went futher in and drilled the factory sealed fuel enrichments screws. Factory had set them at #1, 1/4 turn out. #2, 1/4 out. #3. 3/4 turn out. and #4 was 1 and 1/4 out!!!??? I took them all out to 2 and 1/2 turns, and cured the miss from idle to 3 grand, no need for choke when starting and very crisp thottle responce. We also added a hindle slip on, but only after curing the problem. As for the top end noise, we also have a clatter. He has 7400 miles on it now and I'll be checking valves soon. If it cures the clatter I'll let you know.
