electrical advance
I understand that the 2001 07 zx7r has an electrical timing advance system.
****.. my 1985 grand marquis had fuel injection but not this bike! haha
How can someone advance the timing on these bikes? Do you have to buy something?
Am not understanding what "electrical" part controls the timing because this bike does not have a computer (PCM/VCM)
thanks

RE: electrical advance
the "trigger" or "pulse" coil on the throttle side of the bike (under the small cover in front of the clutch) is what commands the CDI to fire.
theres 2 way.. like ted said.. go the rotor way, buy it or make your own.. (we're not all master machinist like he is tho..)
or, make (or buy) a plate that moves the position of the trigger coil itself. the rotor has a roll pin behind it to keep it fromslipping, so unless you remove this, you can't just turn your stock rotor.. tyou can advance or retard the timing if you delete the roll pin tho.. you may really throw you ignition timing out in the process, so be careful.
the bike does the ignition advance (up to 10*) in the computer, and the value and ramping rate are permanent as well

RE: electrical advance
i haven't looked at the rotor - but replacing the roll pin with a set screw should do the trick of allowing adjustability. problem is that making small adjustments of 5* will be difficult.

RE: electrical advance
wow, our bikes really do have computers?
did you ( WH ) really just say that the max timing on our bikes (stock) is 10*? That is low IMHO. My 02 camaro has a max of like 30, which it could go more but it wouldnt be beneficial. It likes it at 30
thanks for the 411

RE: electrical advance
i wanna say its 10* but actually, now you're making me question it.. lol
cars are way different tho, as you know.
and yes sir, our bikes have (very basic) computers. not alot of technological advancement, but the timing is self adjusting i believe...
wow... right?.. lol
