Crankcase Splitting

Crankcase Splitting
Hi there! Just got back into M/cycling after a long gap (Kids have now left the house - At last!!) and purchased a ZX7R off eBay. The lad who sold it said it a had a small oil leak but when I got it back home and stripped the fairing off the small oil leak was actually a botched repair job (epoxy resin) on the engine cranckcase next to the oil passage at the bottom on the lefthand side of the engine.
So here's the question -
Can I spit the cranckcase without removing all the top end stuff to allow me to check if there's damage to the crank or bearing surfaces?
I've got the service manual which indicates that it can be done but it's pretty vague in its description.
Many thanks in advance.

I hate to say it, but if someone epoxied a broken crankcase I think you were taken. If I were you I would contact ebay and see if you can get your money back. If not I would recomend a full rebuild of the motor with a new crankcase, no telling how long that thing will last glued together. Or keep an eye on the oil and ride like hell till it falls apart, then rebuild it.
Maybe someone here has some experiance with crankcase repair and can help you out better, but there is no way that kid didnt know there was a hole in the motor...

post up some pics. I am trying to visualize where you are referring too and what may have caused the break and possibly the best repairs. Welcome back to the motorcycling world and welcome to KF.

Thanks for the reply guys! Been workin all week and will post some pics to give you an idea of the damage. As for the previous owner I think you're right he must have known the engine was damaged and sold me a duffer.
