Default 1992 K model starter clutch

anyone changed a starter clutch on an early 90s ZX7?

on my sons 92 K model its starting to make this "clunk" sound from the starter area when it starts up. The bike starts and runs fine, no continuous clunking when running and you can even push start the bike.

So I'm thinking either starter or clutch. (would be nice if its JUST the starter, but how often does that happen?)

You could pull the starter and inspect the drive gear as you mentioned already and that would help tell you depending on the wear and the oil change contaminants.

looked at it yesterday. No indications that its coming from the starter drivetrain at all.

Probably going to look at the alternator drive chain assembly

Finally my son was able to get into the right side and have a look. The starter/alternator/oilpump drive chain was excessively loose. Looks like the starter would engage and bunch up the chain, making the pop or clunk sound. Then when the bike started the primary would take the slack out of the chain. Good thing that was found now before the chain or teeth got damaged.

there is a chain adjuster, and chain tensioner over there behind the clutch basket, so he followed the adjustment and tensioner re-set procedure. Its all nice and tight now.
