Default ZX6-R Bogging/Sputtering

Hey everyone,

I know I've only put a few post on here, but hopefully someone can give me some advice anyway....getting pretty bummed out here! Here's my situation:

I just took the whole bike apart (1996 Ninja ZX6-R) to paint the frame and body. I put it all back together last weekend, and everything ran great....so I thought. Take it out for a spin, and it sputters like crazy in 4th and 5th gear specially (can't go much faster then 140 km/h, sucks), but also doesn't run 100% in all other gears too! Seemed like the choke was staying on a little bit, so took it all apart and loosened it up a bit, but still the same....Anyways, moral of the story, I made no mods at all, simply connected everything back together like before, and this is what I get. Any kind of info/adive/tips would be greatly appreciated since riding season has finally arrived in southern Ontario....Thanks alot to all

Maybe some of the vacuum lines are connected wrong. There could also be moisture in the tank & carbs that settled to the bottom. Try draining the float bowls. How long was it sitting apart?

may be fuel starvation due to a clogged fuel filter

Still the same...

Aright...changed the plugs...cleaned up the carbs (float bowls) everything was pretty clean, all vaccums are good...Still the same in 4th and 5th gear the most!! Any other suggestions?? I just hate to have to bring it in to a STEALERship...so expensive for nothing!!

I'm having the same problem on my ZZR600 and I've been told that if everything looks good that the only thing to clear that up it just to ride it... Dare I say, beat on it a bit, take it out and rideand get it "brooke in" again so to speek. I think mine is acting up because it's the first time I've had it out this spring. Good luck

Another thing that may cause problems is bad chassis/ frame grounds. Especially since you painted the frame. Make sure all the harness to framegrounds leads have a good clean and unpainted surface to ground to. A bad or loose ground will cause lts of problems. Was the bike running fine before you took it apart? If it was, you may have missed something when you put it back together. Get a service manual and double check everything. How long did it sit? Is the gas fresh?

There is nothing grounded on the Frame....but I still reconnected and cleaned up the surface of the Chassis Ground, still nothing. Yes the bike was running perfect before, and I even triple checked everything...this is why it's driving me absolutely nuts! My next step is to check my Fuel Pressure tomorrow, and then I guess I'll be checking my ignition coils....but I'm not sure how to check that yet!! Any insights?
The bike sat for about...ummm 5 months, and yes it is Fresh fuel...I've put about 300 KM in the ast few days trying to figure it out.....so I think that if it was a "breaking in" period like AHUFFY said, it should be gone by now!!! HELP HELP HELP....hehe

There should be a harness ground on top of the valve-covers and another one on the frame. I bet the ground for the coils which attaches to the valve cover is not connected or missing. Get a wiring diagram and look for the grounds. I'd do it but there is a row of American Airlines Super 80's for me to fix ASAP! I just got done with lunch; time to get back to work.
