Default steering damper recommendations

I just bought a 2006 zx6r which is my first streetbike, I've always had dirtbikes. Since it is winter here and I cant ride it, Iwas just wondering if anyone thinks I should get a steering damper before I ride it or wait until I get some seat time. My brother said that I should get a Ohlins steering damper. What other types of damper's are good for the 636.

Ohlins, Scotts, GPR, HyperPro and Wilburs are some great dampers. There are other less famous ones but the ones mentioned above are some of the best. Depends on you affordability & style/ taste you like.

I'd say wait also I've got 7,000miles seat time on my 636 now and I'm finally ridin hard enough that I really need a stabalizer/damper...that's my opionion, but some would say if you get in a high speed wobble or tank slapper once when your still gettin used to your bike and it helps save youit's worth it..your call but if u got the money saved why not!!!!

now my next question is do you have to modify your frame (drill holes, weld) to install the steering damper?

With most of them, No mods are necessary. I think with the Scotts, you have to drill & tap 2 holes on the frame just forward of the tank. The Ohlins requires a boss to be welded on the LH side of the frame.

Personally, I consider a steering damper cheap insurance on these bikes and think they should have came with one stock!
I had an Ohlins damper on my CBR and have a GPR on the ZX-6.

I think that I'm leaning toward a GPR damper, I am woundering if you need to buy a mounting kit separately or if it comes with one?

If you buy new, and specify which bike, it should come with the mounting kit.
