Default slip on pipe on a 95 zx6r

is there much of a gain in power to make it worth upgrading the standard can?

Welcome to the forums. Most people will do a bolt on or slip on primarily for cosmetic and noise purposes.

With a bolt-on or Slip-On, you can gain 2-3 HP on the top end mainly because the stock muffler is so restrictive. Some better, more freer flowing designs with mid-pipes can give you up to 5 HP on top end. Full systems can be more than that.

how much do you then lose in the bottom end?

So at what rpm's do you normally run at? Normally, opening up the exhaust will open up the top end with a sacrifice in the lower tq end. Moving things up the scale lets say. You can always play with the cam timing to alter that too. Most people don't play that game though. Fi tuning or carb tuning will get ya close enough.
