No, it does not damage the bike.
It's for safety reasons. Granted, I think it's SAFER to have a shift light b/c you know where your optimal shift points may lie.

Example,my 636 turns 109 (max)horses at 13.5. Thats with 1:2 gearing and akropovic slip on (pre PC mind you), don't need the light for that, 13.5 sounds prettydistinctive LOL. Anyway, you won't damage the bike by not shifting at the shift light, it's only a suggestion.

RE: Shift Light..
PS keep in mind, when shifting by sound as most people do, helmet, earplugs etc, will get you used to the sound of your bike. Changing one of these may alter the sound and therefore alter your shift points. Happens to me everytime I forget my earplugs at the track.

RE: Shift Light..
The factory setting for your shift light ig 12500 RPM's. You can manually adjust your shift light to come on at a different RPM between 12000- 15500. If I remember correctly. I have my shift light so it comes on at 13500 RPM's my point of highest HP. In the owners manual it will tell you how to adjust it. I think it is... Turn the ignition on press and hold down both buttns on the cluster and then adjust the range the same way you do your clock. I fyou need help I can look it up. But aas I stated it is in your manual.
