Power Commander Necessary?

The whole reason it flows freer is to allow more air with less restriction, and with more air comes in more dirt/ dust. All the really fine stuff the stock air filter stops will go through the K&N or BMC. You can see light through those. And airflow follows the path of least resistance.

BMC or K&N will improve the performance but not the life of the engine. The whole reason it flows freer is to allow more air with less restriction, and with more air comes in more dirt/ dust. As long as you dont mind rebuilding your engine sooner and changing the oil & filter more often than recommended.

What I am getting at is if the only thing between my bike and eternity is rebuilding the engine every 40k miles, then can I spend the 100 bucks in parts and do it myself, or is there more to rebuilding a motorcycle engine in comparison to a car?

It's about the same. Just have to make sure ALL the clearances & tolerances are within limits. Honing the cylinders (or boring them 1mm over if necessary with new pistons: Go Forged). You can get a bigbore kit & get more CC's also. Rings, Main & Rod bearings, valve job, seals & gaskets & new camchain. If you have done dragster engines, you shouldn't have any problems. The parts are just smaller and more of them.
