Yes it is! However, they designed it so it doesn't make too big of a mess. Just make sure you change it while it's on the sidestand so the oil drains the way it is supposed to. Get one of those bigoil filter socket wrenches and some engine degreaser then hose it down when you're done.

maybe they were just lazy and didn't take the left fairing completely off. I did mine on the kickstand and then tipped the bike up to get the last of the oil out with the bike straight up and down.

Prolly going to do it every 3mos/3K or maybe every 4mos/4K not sure yet. I'm running hiflo filtro oil filter and Motul 5100 4T syn blend 15w50. I've heard too much bad about Fram.

ps doing your own oil change is a good idea. The wingnut who changed the oil on this bike before I bought it put in an extra quart.[:@] And it was at a shop!

It's pretty straightforward. Phillips driver and hex key for the fairings (the correct size key should be in your tool kit), 17mm wrench for the plug and an oil filter wrench in case the old filter is stuck on there.

When I did mine I started to tighten the filter and heard crunching noises...forgot to clean the dirt from around the oil filter adapter.[:@]

is it just as easy to remove the lower fearing like the 05-06 on the newer bikes? I take mine off when i change my oil/filter = no mess
