I think I may have the same problem. Though I hear more of a grinding after the bike is warmed up. Maybe there related maybe not. I may take mine to the shop if I find anything out I'll let you know.

Cam chain noise? Are you starting the bike leaned over on the sidestand? Oil level good?

Listen carefully around the engine. Use a mechanic's stethoscope (available for about $10 on ebay or $4 from a Harbor Freight store) or use a long handle screwdriver handle to your ear to really get in there. Once you locate the noise you can then figure out what to do. Some ZXs have the ratchet tensioner go bad, as do numerous other Kawasakis. I'm the guy who did the manual tensioners for the KLX250 among others, and do them for the ZX as well.

I won't tell you to do one unless you actually have the noise located to the cam drive - then do it. In other words if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm telling you how to figure out where the noise is coming from.

It would be suprising to hear of a bike losing a crank bearing, but not totally out of the question. The rev limiter should make it tougher to damage the crank, but who knows. Running low on oil can cause damage too.

Another thing that shows up in some bikes is clutch basket noise. Listen in around there. Sometimes the rivets get loose and can cause noise.

The cam drive will be quite obvious if you listen right beside the cam drive side of the engine. It is quite evident. If you want to see what a bad tensioner looks like check the pictures out here.

Whatever you do, do not believe that "all Kawasaki engines are noisy". Find out what the noise is and then find out if it can cause problems. I sure hope it isn't the crank.

If you do find it is cam drive noise, PM me. I can help.

I asked around at a local shop. They said that a cam chain that's to tight would cause a grinding noise. Anyone agree with that?
I'm still going to check out other things, but just wondering on that.
