Nail in rear tire

Nail in rear tire
So, I was washing my bike today and discovered a nail inside the tread in the dead center of the damn rear tire. Not leaking at the moment, but I'm going to take it in the morning to get a new tire installed. What pisses me off the most about it is that the rear tire only has 1800 miles on it and the dealer won't do **** for me. Looks like I'll be going to this place called Cycle Gear. The stock tire is $135 and $20 to install.

dont change it, buy a tire plug kit from autozone or pep boys or whatever. they are about 10 bucks. its easy to plug a tire, do it at the gas station next to the air pump. theres no problem with running a plugged tire i have done it for years, and you will get more nails with sticky gummy aftermarket tires, so its a good idea to keep some extra tire plugs and the kit in your tool kit in your bike. if you do buy a new tire, dont get the battlax, go with an aftermarket, like the pilot power or an avon, or the pirelli corsa, or the dunlop, or whatever, stay away from that rock hard stock battlax pos tire. just plug it man, its practically a new tire.

i have heard guys say they dont like tire plugs, but i have run a lot of tires and had alot of nails and i have had no problems whatsoever with plugs. has anyone had any problems personally they have experienced with tire plugs? if so, please share.

I have used plugs too but they were a mushroom style plug that needs to be installed on the tire after it has been removed from the rim. Never had a problem with them on the street.
However I would not use it on a tire for my track bike or if i was canyon carving, to much can go wrong at high speeds to have the risk of a plug failure. For the commuter I would recommend for sure.

i agree, things can happen but have you dealt with it personally? i have heard people say its a bad idea, but i mean track and street are too different things. i wouldnt run a plugged tire on the track, id run a new racing slick. a tire plug kit can save your *** from a tow or walking your bike for miles. its saved me a few times. i havent ever hear of a blowout or anything serious because of a tire plug. i just hear people say they dont do it.... i dont know.. but dc, walight has a point if you decide to scrap the tire burnout central and post some pics of it. Here in cali its hard to find a shop that will install that mushroom plug any more, they say its about the liability but I say better for them to sell a tire then a un-mount and remount charge. ****!

lol. i dont know, its all preference i guess like anything else, but i ride hard, and tire plugs havent caused me any problems and i have plugged my tire more times than i can count. better than buying a whole new tire in my opinion.

I've heard great things about the mushroom plugs. I'd do that instead of replacement unless I was racing at the track. You can also buy Race Take-offs cheap for street use. $75 to $100 a set of sticky tires great for the street.
