Notstock, why don't you fill the oil filter? I always fill in as much as I can without spilling so there's no bearing oil starvation (while the filter fills up) when you first start the bike up. I've always done this, even with cars.

im not the one to flame, but u guys are making this oil changing thing a little more complicated than it really is.... very very simple task. dont make it harder than it is. i dont think a haynes manual is necessary for this!

It's not exaclty second nature to everyone to care for their bikes. I think that if you want to learn things right, look in the book first or look at the factory specs so you don't get thrown off by people telling you it takes an hour to drain. It is a simple procedure, yes, but these are the ones that are the most important and often messed up because of over confidence and thinking that you do know everything there is to know about changing oil. I think this is an excellent post and gives you a few different perspectives on how people change their oil. Also, the manuals are a good reference for anything, what type of oil to use for the climate, what the factory used for oil/filter, how much it will use, even the torque used on the filter and drain plug! Props to the guys that use the manuals to reference even the most simple jobs on their bikes, at least I know the proper torque to put on my drain plug!

On my 03, I have to remove the LH lower fairing only to change the oil. That's the first thingI do. Then loosen the drain bolt and let it drain while I loosen the filter and get all the rest of the stuff together. Speaking of oil change, It's time to do it again.
