Default Help please

Ok I have a 05 ZX-6R and recently I went to go adjust my chain that was waaaaaayyy loose. So after I adjusted the chain and lubed it, I noticed that when I spun the tire freely it would tension up and looses causing tight areas and loose areas while rotating the tire. I spun the tire slowly and watched all the teeth on the rear sprocket go into the chain with no problem but at some points while riding slow I could hear the chain makng a popping noise at low speeds..... Tell me what in the world did I screw up and how do I fix it. I tried loosening the chain a bit but if I loosen it too much it falls out of specs for proper tension and the chain still has uneven tension around it. Help Please

the poping was probley the loose chain trying to jump off the sprockets. take the chain off and see if theres a stiff spot, you can try cheaning it real good or just replace the chain and sprockets. might be a good time for a power up kit. check both sprockets to see that the teeth are straight too. kinda hard to diagnose anything over the innernet so good luck.

also double check your chain and sprocket allignment.

Yeah, I agree with Evil. Sounds like the chain is stretched out and unevenly. Replace it and inspect the sprockets; if they're worn, replace them also. Go with the 520 kit.

I have seen this happen in many bikes and 99% of the time it was because the chain was not properly lubricated. This causes the rubber O or X rings in the links to dry and crack and not flex the way they should which leads to the chain not forming tightly around the sprockets and causing tight areas and loose areas depending on where the dry links are. The best way to fix this besides replacement is to take off the chain and leave it soaking in oil (used motor oil for example) for a good 24 hours and then put it on and adjust the tension as normal.

For reference, I spray down my chain after every single ride. The best time to spray a chain is when its warm since the rings are hot and expanded and they absorb the lube better. I use only Bel-Ray chain wax and it works great!

if his chain was popping, theres a good chance theres sprocket fragments all jammed up in it too.

05 how does the bel ray do as far as flinging off ?

The Bel-ray is a wax so it goes on thick and dries to the chain, this is another reason why they say to put it on a warm chain and let it sit at least 1 hour. The next day when I spray it again after a ride, there is still a white residue of the wax on the chain links. It stays on the chain very well and I have not seen any build up on the bike, so any fling off is minimal at best.

That is just an old rule of thumb that has been passed down to me from the generations, know what I mean. I am sure that it can be reduced to every couple of rides or every couple of hundred miles. I am just obsseive compulsive about my bikes.

I just checked the can and it doesn't say how often to do it and it also recommends a minimum dry time of only 10-15 mins or until tacky.
