Default HELP on choosing a ninja.

Im looking into buying a ninja zx 6r. Ive decided to buy used, but am wondering if there is a year that is better than others. It seems like the 05 did real well, is the 06 identical? Are then any models of the bike before the 05 which are more popular than others. As far as aftermarket, is there a model that is a lot easier to mod? Also, what is good mileage on a used bike?I dont want to buy a bike with an engine near death. Thanks

Agree with Hoedogg. I'd probably try to get as new as possible, as well-maintained as possible, for as cheap as possible.
It's almost more "bike-specific" than a collective "year." However, keep us updated with what you find and we can offer guidance from there.
Good luck!! And, welcome to KF!

the 98-02 model is a great bike to learn on. a fair amount of aftermarket parts are available. i know the 636 model looks alot better and has the true sportbike look. i personally like the 03's and 05's.

As far as value of the bikes, my reading suggests there was quite a bit of technical improvements in the '06 model. But it depends on how much bike you really need I suppose. You might use this as a bargaining point if you get something older than '06.

What % of street riders use even 50% of the capability of these things?? [sm=gears.gif]

if your lookin for power get the 03-04 zx 6r if your lookin for a better handleing 6r get a 05-06 model, they have a better suspension setup but i think they was down on power for some reason, but with the wire jumper mod u will be in the ballpark with the 03-04 zx 6r's

The 2003/2004 ZX-6R has 111.4 whp (12,750 rpms) and 47.1 ft-lbs of torque. (11,000 rpms)
The 2005/2006 ZX-6R has 113.8 whp (13,250 rpms) and 48.1 ft-lbs of torque. (11,000 rpms)
These bikes were all on the same dyno by the same company, so the actual number may differ from other dynos but the difference between the two will not change no matter what dyno you use. Plus the 2005 power band looks a ton smoother and more power throughout the rpm range.

If you want a 636 ninja a 2005 model year bike will give you the newer looks, more power and better suspension than the 03/04's and be cheaper than a 2006 model.

+1; and the 05-06 is more comfortable for longer rides that he 03-04. With the ECU jumper Mod, you get an instant 5 additional HP! It also has a faster top speed! 166mph stock.

Whatever you get, make sure it's black. Black is more comfortable and reduces wind buffeting by 9.5%
