As for the bike... I also have a 03 636... And my bike ticks... It's because of the aluminum head's. They use lightweightaluminum for better performance so it's normal for them to be a little noisy. I switched to synthetic oil and that quieted it down a little. Also try RXP (http://www.rxp.com/) in the gas tank. This quieted the bike down even more.

glad to know its not so bad, ill pick up some of that rxp after my first tank of fuel, pretty sure the bike hasn't been run much in the last year, so want to get things re wron in before using any additives.

Oh yeah thanks for the thanks on service, when I was in training for two years I always thought the thank yous were not warrented, but now I realize how hard the military works and the dedication that our troops have and it is very nice to hear apperication from time to time, so again thank you for thanks and thank you for helping me out.

so I just got back from my first ride, i definately was a little nervous, partly because the material condition of the bike is in question and partly due to having had 4 years past since my last ride. Anyways I noticed that either the front end has problems in the balance area or I am oversensitive to bumps as I felt I had to wrangle the steering strait, which in turn made me lose confidance in the bikes handling and resulted in some ugly turns. Going to have a buddy that rides alot come over and ride it to see if its me, the bike or the street that is to blame.

still couldn't shift out of 1st and n, but the rod is super bent so I guess that is to blame.

 

thats probably the problem. since neutral is only a half shift it it would be the easiest to make. try taking the rod off and hammering it straight.

 

Hello and welcome. I my opinion - trying to adjust things and use them normally when they are broke, bent, misaligned and bad is hard to do. If sounds like you ae on the right path by replacing bad parts, but please wait for final judgment on rding when all things are correct. Do you have history of bike and if any major events occurred. That might help you determine work needed.
Some bikes have 'positive nuetral' which won't shift if not running. Also alignment is cricital since you are trying to change liner motion to rotating motion.

Concerning the front end issue. Measure from axle center to the lower triple clamp. Possibly not the same distance after the crash. You can easily realign yourself. Unless of course it is bent. Then I would check fluid heights in the fork tubes to know that even if it may not be a problem, record that info in your manual. Then for sh*ts and grins, measure axle to axle after you checked the forks.

I agree on not messing or straightening aluminum because of possible work hardening. If you crash because a part finally breaks and makes more of a mess.......? Good luck
