No you don't have to remove your fairing. I find it a lot easier to remove the whole airbox and then remove the air filter. Remove the passenger/ rider seat and unbolt the front of the tank. Use a piece of wood or ? to hold up the tank and remove the forward bolt, loosen the clamps on the velocity stacks, disconnect 3 vacuum/ vent hoses, and unplug the IAT sensor. Lift the rear of the airbox, slide it back, rotate it to the right and remove the airbox assembly. It's much easier to work on.

this is how my bike spent the winter when I got back from Iraq. I didn't have to remove any of the main fairings for the air filter removal.
