RE: 96 zx6r carbs
for the rust in the tank they make a 3 stage coating system which works really well...i would have the carbs taken apart and cleaned...you can do that yourself its very simple...i dont know if there are any aftermarket mods on it but if there is an exhuast you might want to consider re jetting it for a smother perfomance...but other than that i would just check all your engine fluids and the main things to have a safe running bike...good luck man...

11,000 miles and rust in the tank? dang.
I too would pull the tank, pull the carb rack and do a thorough cleaning. Never tried the tank coating though. sounds like a good idea.

To remove rust from your tank, remove the fuel valve (Petcock), seal up the tank really well and put in some Muriatic acid (Stuff fo swimming pools). Slosh it around and it will eat up all the rust. You can even try Phosphoric acid too. Works great! Then rinse out the tankand immedately spray WD40 inside it. BE Careful !!!
Muriatic Acid like to eat concrete so do it on the dirt or in a plastic tub.
