RE: racing at barber track in birmingham
I, too, am a first time racer (on a track). I figured I needed to learn about track riding and get off of the street. That would be the only advice I am qualified to give.
I am going to the keith code school at Barber in June. If you are going, look me up, I will be doing the level 1 and 2 schools. I will be on a 07 ZX10.
I will look for ya,

Do not go into it thinking you know everything. Heed recommendations and learn what works best for you after trying things out. If you think you are a great street rider (you probably are), do not be discouraged if you get lapped. Some great learning to be had on the track.

After I was registered, they recommended reading Twist of the Wrist I & II. I have already changed the way I look at riding after my initial reading and I haven't even studied it to any detail yet.
I agree, though. I am going in with the guise of being a sponge and soak up all that I can! I don't think I am the greatest street rider/racer. If I was, I wouldn't be programming computers, right? lol
