Valve adjustment tool
Hello everybody,
I just got a ninja 500 and I am trying to get all tools I need to do the maintenance. Would the following tool work for the valve adjustment?
http://www.pitposse.com/vaadkit.html
Thanks in advance,
Dan

RE: Valve adjustment tool
While it looks neat, a 10-mm wrench and flat-head screwdriver will accomplish the same task for less than $19.99.
I seriously considered getting one of those a few years ago, but while those unecessary nick-nacks are neat, after you've got enough of them in your toolbox, it becomes harder to find the things you actually need.
But that's just one dudes opinion. If you decide to get it anyway, try adjusting your valves both ways and let us know if it makes the job that much easier.

RE: Valve adjustment tool
The mighty R1 has shims-under buckets (and also has an ODD number of valves, which makes it entirely alien and freakish, and perhaps even designed by the French) not screw/locknut like our beloved 500R.
(Just kidding. Yamaha's 5-valve head is a design triumph ((errr... victory) I mean, piece-de-resistance), and I'm an absolute francophile.)
-CCinC (after a bottle and a half of some kick-@$$ viognier)

RE: Valve adjustment tool
Well, I am a little confused.
The Kawasaki tool is a 9 mm. (See link)

Do I need a 9 o a 10 mm socket?
Thanks,
Dan

Not sure about the 250's (which is what those guys are working on), I'm a 500 man myself.
I've always used a 10mm open-end while snugging, then a 10mm socket when torquing the locknuts (which is either 20 or 25 Nm--can't remember which right now. Either way, that fancy tool does not have a torque wrench.)
And even if you're butter-fingered enough to drop a socket into your head, it's no major catastrophe. Just pick it back up again. (?) Are these guys adjusting the valves with the engines running or what?
Peace!

RE: Valve adjustment tool
I do all the work on my bike while it's running.
let me tell you it is a bitch and a half to do anything involving the crank!
That is a neat little tool, but if you can get away with a single wrench and a single screwdriver for a fraction of the cost of one of those, go for it. My buddy has one of those gadgets for his chainsaw, which it does come in handy when the chain flies off in the field and you're alone and don't want to set your saw in the dirt or anything.
