MY 88 WAS RUNNING A LITTLE CRAPPY (CARBS) AND I HAD MY MECHANIC CLEAN THEM.BIKE RAN GREAT.ALL OF A SUDDEN IT 2 WEEKS LATER STARTED SOUNDING LIKE A 2 STROKE AT STEADY THROTTLE AND WOULDN'T IDLE.I HAD ALREAD PULLED THE TANK CHECKED THE PETCOCK FOR CLEANLINESS AND OPERATION AND THE TANK AND GAS WERE SPOTLESS.DRAINED CARBS AND GAS WAS FINE NO CRUD OR GUNK.MECHNIC LOOKED AT IT SUNDAY AND REPLACED THE VACUUM LINE TO PETCOCK.BIKE SOUNDED FINE IDLED AND REVVED NO PROBLEM.3 BLOCKS DOWN THE ROAD EXACTLY SAME PROBLEM.PULLS STRONG AT HIGHER REVS AND BOTH PIPE ARE HOT.i HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH 700SC NIGHTHAWK AND IT WAS THE PLUG WIRES.AS IT'S INTERMITTENT I HAVE TO FIGURE ELECTRICAL NOT CARB WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING FOR NEW WIRES?

Before looking for possible electrical problems, make sure the easy ones have been ruled out.
It's very common when carbs are rebuilt, for the float levels to be upset. The little plastic arms of the float valves are very easily thrown off. I would take the bike to a different mechanic and ask that the float levels be checked.
OR, if you have the service manual and a clear tube, you can do it yourself.
