Hey well i dont check the oil on the sidestand. I have my wife hold it up usually and i check it then. So how would i know if it needs new o rings or pistons should i take it in and get it looked at? How much would that cost any rough ideas??? Well i guess i will just keep putting oil in it. It doesnt take that much oil every month or 1,000 miles so? I dont know what to do? If i did get new pistons would i have to break it in again?

 

I wouldn't worry too much about it. In order to get the piston rings replaced, the whole engine would have to be torn down completely. It would be more cost effective to just top off with oil more often.

 

then again, or do it right if you want some. What? maybe $200 for a rehatch, pistons and rings, gaskets?

 

Well it would be worth 200hundred dollars if that is all it cost to get it running correctlly?

 

Don't forget the Labor costs unless you plan on tearing down the engine yourself.

 

it all depends on how many tools you have and if they are the right kind to allow you do DIY.
only reason i know as much about cars (and working on bikes now) is from not being afraid to DIY rather than trust some random mechanic (bad experience when i was 16) and i slowly gathered tools as i needed them that allowed to me to do all my own work.

as long as the cylinder walls don't need honing then it could be as simple as removing the engine, tearing it down and putting it back together with new gaskets, pistons, rings, etc and meticulously retorqueing all the bolts to spec as you go. might take a week of evenings this way but would save you a lot of money and gain you some major satisfaction in having done it yourself.

highly recommend getting the full factory service manual before doing it though
