gas mileage?

RE: gas mileage?
I thought my mileage was low but I found out that it's okay. I get 45 mpg no matter how I drive it. Mine is a 1992 EX 500. The previous owner also said he gotten 45 mpg. I drive mostly highway and no matter what I still get 45 mpg. I can drive 55 mph or I can drive 75-80 mph. I can gun it at lights or drive it under 5,000 rpms. I can tuck at speed or I can sit up right. It still get's 45 mpg. I changed the plugs, wires, rebuilt carbs, flushed out the tank, changed the oil, cleaned the air filter, checked tire pressure. Still 45 mpg. Mostly the traffic I drive in has a strong head wind and cross wind most of the spring and summer. In the winter when there are no winds I can squeeze up to 49 mpg out of it. But that's it. I live in California if that has anything to do with it. I took off all the emmissions stuff. Those of you who are consistantly getting 50+ I envy you.

RE: gas mileage?
u guys also need to get gas from the same gas station everytime to get an accurate reading. for example: chevron vs arco; i get to fill more gas with chevron.
K-crunch.. what emissions stuff did u remove?

RE: gas mileage?
Well after seeing a few more posts from people getting 50 or less, I feel better.
Actually my last tank was my best ever. I decided to try riding it harder to see what would happen. I started shifting at 5k+ instead of 4-4.5k. I got 212 miles out of the tank (53 mpg), whereas my previuos best was 202.
So I guess trying to accelerate at less than 4k rpm is probably not a good thing. I probably raised my average RPM by 500, and the bike performs better too.

RE: gas mileage?
Make sure you check the air pressure in your tires. Keeping your head under the slipstream will help. The less wind resistance you have, the less power your bike has to make to maintain the same speed. Check your air filter... a dirty air filter will suck the fuel economy right out of your bike.

RE: gas mileage?
My mpg varies from 49, serious flogging to nearly 60. My daily commute is 80 miles3/4's of which is on 4 lanes at 80 indicated, 50+mpg. I check my tire pressure weekly, clean chain and check tire pressure once a week. The only other thing that I've done is the 1" hole in the left side of the air box mod( he said not to call it his F*G mod anymore)and backed out the pilots, right now their either at 1 3/4 or 2 turns out I can't remember.
Oh yes I GPS'd the odometer on Saturdays ride and while the speedo is aprox 10% off the odometer registered 174.3 vs 172 on the GPS 1.01% if I did that right.
