Breaking in a Ninja 500
Hi,
I just purchased a 2006 Ninja 500 and I'm curious to see how one breaks in a bike when you have to accelerate. I know you're not supposed to go beyond 4,000 rpm within the first 500 miles. I find it difficult to do when I need to accelerate a bit.
Thanks,
Nadine

RE: Breaking in a Ninja 500
id say put it on a stand and plop it in gear and let the miles stack up. your not going to hurt the motor if you go over the recamended 4g's kawai just has that in writing to cover their ***. just because its new and this is how i allways done it, try to keep the rpms low, if you need to hit 8 grand for a moment, it wont kill it. what will kill it is banging the redline through all the gears with 14 miles on the bike. welcome to KF and ride safe.

RE: Breaking in a Ninja 500
I agree, I just got my bike brand new this January 2006 and now I have almost 5000 miles on it. The break in I think is the first 1,000 miles but Ive heard that true break in occurs within the first 5,000 miles. The first service shortly after or around 500-500 miles is important. You are cleaning out chips of metal from the pistons as they break in. I have been changing my oil every 1,000-1,500 miles based on some info I read about oils and lubrication. I ride the **** out of my bike now and have not had any problems. Ride it soft up to 1,000 and then break that bitch in the right way by slowly revving (reving?) up............dont kill it in the redline, unless you plan on racing it. You'll feel when the torque on the ex500 hits, not alot but still alot of fun. John
