Default Brake Light Flasher Mod

Just wanted to bring a heads up.

I am working on a no cut no splice OEM style wiring mod tutorial for adding a BackOFF or simialr brake light flasher. With this mod you will simply unplug your OEM Plastic rear brake light connection and plug in the custom wiring harness. Great part is it will fit directly into the OEM connector to reduce the risk of shorts and allow you to remove and convert the bike back to OEM config in about 2 min.

Anyways is anyone interested in a tutorial for this type of mod?

can you take a picture of the white plast connectors internal organs that feed your taillight?

If so i can tell you if its the same connector type.

I'll have to hold off on the mod for a while. I've been spending quite a bit of money doing stuff to the bike and don't think the wife is liking me spending so much. Oh well the bike is looking better LOL that's the whole point right.

Ok,

Here we go.

First things first. I will walk you through the mod.

1 This mod allows you to install a brake light flasher unit such as a BackOFF Xp or similar.
for the purposes of this write up we will refrence the wiring of the BackOFF XP module since thats what I bought.

First parts you wiull need:

BackOFF XP or similar flasher module.
Red/Black stranded wire (radioshack sells a wire with both red and black attached http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search
Wire Stripper / Crimper http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search (this is the one i used)
Wiring Harness Connector http://www.hvccycle.com/electerminals.htm for a Kawasaki EX500R use the Part Number 34-8343 it uses B-9, B-10 Connectors (pick up some extra B-9 & B-10 Connectors the parts come with 3 of each but if you make any mistakes youll have to order more.Part number 34-8967 B-9 & 34-8967 B-10)

This is everything youll need.

Youll get what looks like this.

Ok, first take off the seat of your bike, locate the connector for the brake light. ( its in the section under the tail, it will have a black and yellow striped wire, a blue wire with red stripe, and a red wire. this is a locking connector so hold down the locking catch and unhook the two ends.

now you have to build the wiring harness.

The Black with yellow striped wire is your ground
The Red wire is your power for the tail light when your headlight is on.
The Blue wire is your brake wire.

easy enough.

Ok you will need to take the solid red wire from the Backoff module, and attach a male spade to it.
The next part is the trick part, you need to take the black wire from the BO module AND a length of red and black wire thats twice as long as the rest of the BO module wires.
you will need to crimp the BO black wire AND the radioshack black wire to the same spade (male) connector.
ok now the red side the dual colored wire. Crimp the last male spade to this end.

DO NOT PLUG THE PARTS INTO THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR YET

OK now for the other side

Take the RED wire with white stripe OR the White wire with red stripe (each performs a different flash pattern) from the Bo modile crimp a female spade connector to it.
Then crimp a female spade to the other end of the black side of the dual wire.
Then crimp a female spade to the red side of the dual colored wire.

OK

AGAIN DO NOT PLUG THE PARTS INTO THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR YET

Now you will have a bunch of wires with gold connectors of them.

This is a good time to test your wiring you can plug the wires into the stock harness connection WITHOUT adding your white plastic housing to test...yet

so if you decide to test the red wire from the flasher unit goes to the blue wire on the bike side of the connector.
the red wire to red wire
and the black wire to black wire.

for the brake light side:
red wire with white stripe goes to blue.
the red goes to red
and black to black

now you should be able to turn on your bike and test the module
when the key is in the on position you will get a steady red brake light.

standing on teh right side of your bike push down the foot brake pedal with your toe and you should see your desired flash pattern.

(note: if you get no lights or no flashes check your wiring)

ok now youve tested teh unit it flashes your happy!.

Now to get the blades into thier new homes. get the battery side connector see previous pic. the female ends go in here.
slide the connectors in from behind and they will snap into place when they are in place properly they will not pull out because of a metal tab of the connector prevents it from pulling out once installed in the housing.. Thats why you dont want to install them until you've test and are standing by the bike.

For each of the wire so they will plug into the proper wire when inserted. (when your done it should look like)

OK now the ends are done

looks like

now all you have to do is wrap it so the wires wont rub any vibrating bike body parts and mount it on the bike.

Thtas it, now you can remove the unit if you sell the bike or get into an accident (god forbid)
