hi everyone, just picked up an 07 ninja and was wondering what oil u guys use. the previous owner had it serviced at a dealership and they put in 20w50. do any of u run other types of oil besides spec? or is the 20w50 just for break in cuz it has a lower viscocity?? thanks guys

 

Im not sure at break in but I use either penzoil or castrol 10w-40. They are cheap but I dont keep em in the motor long enough. If you change it quick you shouldnt have anything to worry about. Just dont run synthetic during break-in.

 

hm ok. well the thing is i coudln't get it to start cuz the oil light was on. i added more 20w50, but still wouldn't go. i managed to get it started one time, but as soon as i barely let off the choke, it dies again. does anyone know what the problem is?

 

i forgot to add a little detail. the oil is a little bit above the top line on the guage, but i don't think that's the problem =\

 

If it wont start it usually doesnt have to do with oil. Id guess it'd be the carbs. A thorough cleaning should do em good

 

I hope you're checking the oil with the bike up and center. If the bike is on the side stand, then you are over filling it.

 

yea, i had a friend that held it for me while i looked. would having a little too much oil be the problem though? or should i just take it to the dealership to have everything checked?

 

Yup, the oil should be at the full line when your holding it straight and halfway up the glass when its on the centerstand.

 

And, 20w50 is too high of a viscosity. stick with 10w40.

 

they don't hold much so its easy to over or under fill them i like to run golden spectro 10w40 full senthict
