hey notstock, that is the best advice i've heard yet. i made that mistake myself, i just got into sportbikes so i was intimidated after riding my brothers suzuki sv 1000 in colorado, so when i got back i purchased a new 500 r as a tool, but being a two wheel junkie for the pat 23 years, i picked up the skills rather quickly but now i'm ready to go and buy something bigger bigger, (e.i. kawasaki zx12r) hopefully soon, but the disadvantage is that i paid 6400.00 for my 500r with the fees and all, but the blue book value is only a little over 3000.00 so i would take a huge loss if i tried to sell it right now. Not that i don't love my bike, don't get me wrong but progression is the name of the game, when your in it for life. so i decided to just keep my 500r and customize it until there's nothing left to customize. and just save some greenbacks for my zx12r...well at least that's the plan...

 

YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM KEEPING UP WITH YOUR BUDDIES ON THE 250 UNLESS THEY ARE GOING OVER 115. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY GET SOMTHING BIGGER BUT FOR THE PRICE THE 250 IS GOOD OR IF YOU ARE NEW TO BIKES. I JUST BOUGHT A 250 I IS MY FIRST BIKE AND IF I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT SOMTHING BIGGER I WOULD HAVE DUMPED IT A COUPLE OF TIMES. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS GEAR RATIO YOU WILL BE IN 5TH GEAR AND YOUR BUDDIES WILL BE IN 3RD. I HAD MY 250 AT 100 AND PLENTY OF ROOM BEFORE RED LINING IT AND IT IS STOCK YET. I WOULD SAY TRY 1 BEFORE YOU BUY ,GET ON IT FIRST IF YOU ARE COMFY GET IT BECAUSE IT IS SMALLER.

 

HaHa which is why I bought my 250 used for 2k and now I'm selling it for 2300..Muahahahah and now I gots da 636....got my skills up on the 250 (I'llalways love it cause it was my first bike)and now the 6R is hella fun.

 

im assuming that guy bought a 250. waste of time in my opinion.

 

just tell your budys that it may be a beefed up scooter but it will do 115 with a 250 lb rider on it besides if you deside that you want to move up later there is alowys sombody looking for a first bike. from what i have seen the 250 seams to hold its value prity well. just reacently a local consiment shop hade a 1991 for $2300

Just bought my '97 250 and it runs like a charm. This is my first bike andI love it. Even my boyfriend who crashed a 750 10 years ago,likes the bike andmaybe getting back into the sport!!It's easy to handle, and great to learn on.What also good is that a 250 is typicly not used and abbused, unlike other larger cc bikes.So if you wanted tobuy it used, it's not a bad buy..
(mindu, I've already dropped the bike at a stand, and I've only had it for 4 days).
My brother (who has a honda 929) calls it a "glorified mopad". Compared to a 900 cc, YEAH...it seems like a mopad, but I have to tell you, it has a kick and itWILL move if you twist the throttle.As far as the MSF course, you need to take that. Consider it a matter of life or death.It cost 250.00 for the course (inJersey) and is 3 day long. There serious about what theyteach u and how to use and move thebike.

It's been awhile since my last post but I thought I'd update you guys. I now have my motorcycle license after taking the motorcycle safety course. I didn't get it until about a week ago. I've been waiting for my best friend to pass the written test. After he failed for the fourth time and had to start the process over again I just couldn't wait any longer. Plus my temps was about to expire. I have two bikes in mind, a 1992 suzukigs500 for $1500 and a 1999 ninja 250 for $1800. I can't make up my mind which one.

 

oh yeah, they sell brand new for 3k and then sell for almost the same down the road. I always watch ebay and the local papers for good deals. thats how I have my yamaha r6 and my harley in the garage. granted they are in pieces (Harley was a rebuild and yamaha I crashed near WashDC), but once thier done, I can sell my 250R for a good price to someone else who would need it for first time, or whatever.
Plus you can always go out of your way and teach others how to ride easier on a 250 than a 6R.

 

I'm new to all of this as well and also looking into a 250r. For those who say you'll regret not getting a 600+ like the R6 etc ... yes it's true that a responsible adult can use judgment and control and not go "mental" first time out on an R6 or whatever, but people make mistakes, and the R6 style race replicas, from my reading and listening to experienced riders are NOT forgiving of errors.

My advise would be to get the 250 as a skill builder, or a mild mannered 500. There will always be a high demand for learner bikes like the 250 because more and more people join the sport every year. Where there is demand, there is good resale. When you've "outgrown" your 250 you can offload it for little loss and get something with more power then. I don't honestly think you will regret getting one. Just my .02.
