Opinion on bike for new rider please.
Hi,
I am new to the forum, yay
But i'm pretty much sold on the 08 250r, i plan on buying it tomorrow actually if my banking goes well.
But I am supose to be getting a bike with my roommate, he is 6'2 280 lbs. I was told by the dealership that the 250 is definitely not enough for him. He has never driven a bike or dirtbike, but we do plan on going on road trips. What do you guys suggest?

For 280# rider that wants a sportbike instead of a Harley I'd go for a Suzuki Bandit 1200. They are reliable, pretty cheap, and has good control as long as he's not a wanna-be speed demon.

So a 250 would be too little for him then? We find the look of the 500R not too great. And It makes you lean a lot more, for a new rider is that a good idea?
edit: hmm i like the idea, it's a nice bike, but a new rider to start on a 1200cc?

ok, well lets say we sell the 250r after 1 year, we are learning on them. Is it feasible for him to ride a 250 for the first year? or should he really look at a 500?
As new riders we don't want to break the bank, the 250r seems good to learn on, he's just concerned about being 280 lbs and wondering if he can keep up with traffic and maneuver the bike.

The 250R is a very cheap bike. But it is a tiny framed bike too. If you're only going to keep it for one year, why spend double the money. You'll buy the 250, let's say for 4000 dollars(which is a bit high as is). then in another year you're gonna spend another 5-8k if not more, depending on the bike you choose. It just seems like a better idea to buy the bike you're gonna like and enjoy for more than a year in the first place. I did my motorcycle training course on 125s and 250s and I'd hate to ride them for more than one weekend. Granted, the new 08 is a faster, better geared and full sized-ish bike but it is still a 250. For your situation, I'd say go for a bigger bike from the start, maybe the 500R or if you dont like the look of the naked bike, go for a 650R. Just my opinion of course.

The problem I see i hear everyone drops their first bike, I would be pissed dropping a bike that cost me 8500 (650R). or are people exaggerating when they say that most people drop their first bikes?
