Exclamation New rider - Jetting?

Hi,

I have my test next week and pick up my first bike in a couple of weeks (a black Ninja 250r ) and I was looking to get the Yoshimura slip on exhaust for it when I pick it up...

How much does "re-jetting" cost and will the Kawasaki dealer be able to do this for me?

Jets are very cheap, but getting the right ones selected can be a bit time consuming. Dealer will do that at a price.

If the bike is new, I'd leave it stock until at least after break in, and be aware that you might be stuffing the warranty.

If it's used, just leave it and see how it runs. A plug chop will tell you whether you need to change the jetting.

Thanks Rob.

I'll leave it stock for til I've run it in and then consider the slip on then.
I've read about how long it takes to run the 250r in... considering riding from Leeds to London and back again to get it done with in a weekend...
Have you got the same bike?

No. I run the ER-6f.

For break in (and I know someone will post disagreeing), I'd be gentle for the first 100 miles - about 5 or 6K rpm on the 250, adding 1,000 - 1500 rpm for every hundred miles.

You can knock off the first 100 taking it home from the dealer - go the pretty way. Avoid keeping it at constant revs- which might mean avoiding motorways. If it's like most Kawasakis the gearbox will need a lot of use before it gets nice and smooth, so roads that call for a lot of shifting are good. Good for the motor as well. By about 500 miles it should be OK for short bursts of full throttle/peak revs, but I mean short. Spend the next 500 miles increasing the duration of those bursts. Don't skip the first service. I'd also suggest a 5 minute cool down every 20 minutes for the first 100 - 150 miles.

From Leeds I'd suggest Manchester (easy ride on the motorway), drop down into Macclesfield on the A6, (lots of gear changing through the traffic), then the Cat and Fiddle pass (get a real feel for the handling - but don't push it), Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock (Bikes rule on Sundays), Ashbourne, Stoke, Newcastle, then the A34 into Manchester and pick up the motorway again to get home. Gives you a good mix of roads to get a lot of the break in over and you'll be able to see what the bike does in a variety of conditions.

Enjoy the bike.

That's a cool bike man. and an awesome reply, thanks! I'll take a look at that route for my first weekend with it.
Thanks for the advice on breaking it in too. My dealership is 100 yds away so it will have to be the very scenic route... can't wait

Got my test this weekend. Wish me luck! (because I bet it rains).
