Default New owner/rider with questions

I just recently bought a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250R. It's my very first bike. I have ridden a Kawasaki KDX for the past few years and decided to enter the sport-bike world. However, I am new and inexperienced to everything about these kind of bikes. So like most others when they buy something with a motor in it they want stuff to make it look/sound/perform better as do I. Eventually I want to get a full exhuast system but can't afford it right now. I have been browsing the web and see that there is some parts/accessories I might be able to afford but have some questions about them. First off, would it harm the bike to install a K&N air filter before having an aftermarket exhaust system installed? Second, does anyone have HID lights on their bike? If you do, what's your take on them? How much $$? How easy was the installation?

Welcome to KF and congrats on the new ride.

Spend your $'s in gear and the msf course. Worry about customizing your ride later.

Enjoy the new toy

The EX is just like any other carburated ride. Cheap tune for your locale, learn to ride it, any changes, just retune the A/F setup, change timing or cam timing if you really want to play. But a full race suspension would already be present if this would be the case.

HIDs are illegal and unless you're very good could well make your lights worse - brighter, but with blind spots and dazzle to other road users. YOu need a complete lens and reflector assembly, which isn't available, to make these work properly. Main bean shouldn't be changed anyway because of the start up delay.

Concentrate on learning to ride first.

In my opinion putting a k&n air filter on without an exhaust isnt going to do much if any thing for you at all all that air needs a place to go its like breating in thru your mouth then out thru a stuffy nose its restricted

I say yes and no RK. You can tune the best out of an engine with a stock exhaust. I did that for yrs on my zx7. Not saying it was the best hp/tq, but it worked out for a low budget rider like me.

edit: just not sure on how a 250 would do since I have not played with one yet.
