Default New ex250 rider

Hey all! I'm new to motorcycling and I just got my first bike last week. It's a silver '04 with 9xxx miles. Picked it up for $1600

The first mod I plan to do is replace the headline with PIAA Xtreme White Plus H4's.

I'm having a slight problem with the idle. The bike will sputter and die if I start it up without using the choke. Fine. But for some reason even after it warms up it kinda wants to die once I come to a stop and it's in neutral or I pull the clutch in. Also, the choke seems extremely sensitive; at one setting the engine is about to sputter and die, and if I move it microscopically higher, it constantly revs at 3k. What to do?

Welcome!

Your choke is acting normal. (to me anyway.) My 250R is just as sensitive. It's best to pull the choke back before starting the engine so it doesn't act like it's going to cut out as you engage the choke. I would bet you just need to make a slight idle adjustment though. There is an idleadjustment **** on the left side you can see justunder the gas tank petcock valve. Turn it in clockwise a small bit at a time until the bike idles around 1300-1500 RPM's. Make sure the bike has fully warmed up. Also, don't have the choke engaged while making the idle adjustment.

My 07 with 800 miles does the exact same thing. Its in the shop for the second time for this problem under warranty. The first time I had it in during the 500 mile service they told me the idle speed was way low and they set it higher. That did not fix the problem. I messed with the idle myself after getting it back but even having it up to 1600 it would still die sometimes at a stop light. So I took it back on tuesday for them to look at it again. After some reading on the 250 site my problem (and maybe yours) sounds like a rich idle fuel setting. Read these and see if it sounds like your problem.

http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Removin...re_screw_plugs
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/What_is...I_adjust_it%3F

Mine runs fine on 90+ days but it gets real bad if the temp is 70ish or lower. If the dealer does not fix the problem this time Im going to try and adjust the idle mixture myself and say screw the warranty. You have to take out the mixture plugs so they will know I was messing with it. This is my first bike also and I LOVE riding but not knowing if I can take off when the light turns green has really made riding a PITA. I dont watch for traffic or the light to turn because Im looking at the tach to make sure its not going to die on me. I have also heard that tight valves can caue this problem so look into that also. Like Mark said my choke acts the same way as yours does. Hope you figure out whats wrong soon socalninja.

Well its just a guess on my part. On the 250 site it says if you rev it and it drops below idle b4 picking back up its running rich. If it hangs high its lean. Mine sounds like its running rich. Could be that I live at 6000+ feet so the factory setting is lean for this alt. Hope the dealer knows this.

Ok, well after the bike is warmed up this is a non-issue, it idles pretty healthily around 1500rpm without any choke.
However, I did notice the bike sounded like it was "pinging" from 5000-5500rpm, but only in that range. [:-]
I'm not sure it's pinging, it's kind of like a metallic buzzing sound. And it only happens in that RPM range in any gear.

havent heard of the 250's buzzing but a common problem on the zx6r's was the levers causing a harmonic buzz at a certain rpm. try putting a finger on your lever and see if the buzz goes away.
