The best piece of advice that I can give you - is to get what you want and what you can afford. Keep in mind about insurance rates and buying gear. Don't assume that you will 'outgrow' the bike in a year. Everybody told me I'd be bored with my 500 (my first bike) and would definately be uprgading in a year or so - well let me tell you - I still absolutely love my bike and have no intention of updgrading anytime soon.
Good luck with your decision and keep us posted on what you get! And don't forget to take an MSF course too!

Welcome JK!
I'm new to the forums and to riding. Seriously consider taking the MSF, if you haven't. You can still kill yourself on a 250 as easily as you can on a bigger bike.
My advice is to buy used if you can. I got a good deal on my '04 250 that I bought a month ago. So far, it's been a great little bike for learning on. I wouldn't say that I'm ready just yet, but I already know that I will want a bigger bike by the end of the year. Just don't drop too much cash on anything before finding out if riding is really for you.
Again, welcome and good luck!

the advise that bluebird just gave you is the best advise...... moving up to a bigger bike all depnds on the skill of the rider...... if you don't feel confident enough to move up then don't, don't ever let anyone tell you, you should be on a bigger bike..... learn at your own pace and ride at your own pace..... most of all gear up and ride safe...... welcome to the forum..... post some pics when you get your bike.....

Just keep in mind, like richiro said you can still kill yourself on a 250 as easily as you can on a bigger bike. I think you should look for something that is going to allow you to master all the various aspects of riding and not scare the living crap out of you. Learn as much as you can and then when you feel comfortable in your abilities, then you can move up to a bigger bike, if you want to.

I'm new to riding myself. I have checked out some other brands, Yamaha, suzuki, Honda, etc. and you cant get a better deal than the Kawasaki's. I just bought myself an 05 250 for $2000 w/ 4000 miles. You cant find a decent looking and running bike in the other makes for $2000 unless they are like 10 yrs old. I think I'll be pretty happy w/ my 250.
