Default Is the 250r right for me?

I am considering getting a 250r. I am a new rider, I have been on a couple 600s before but never more than a few hours and have never owned a bike. I am 6'1" and 179lbs, I was wondering about my size on the bike as well. I also would like to know if it is worth doing any modifications to this bike. I was thinking maybe a different exhaust. Thanks.

As a new rider you'll learn more, learn it better, it faster than you would on a bigger bike, but the 250 is still fast enough to give the experienced rider some real fun.

Buy the bike and learn to ride it properly, then you'll know what, if any, mods are right for you.

I would just be riding around town, mostly city riding. I would also use it for going to work, which is only about 3.5 miles from my house. I dont plan on any long trips.

Welcome to KF, the 250 price tag is the same as its 500 brother. Good rides to enjoy

So I have talked to a few dealers and they seem to think I would be better suited for a 500. They say with my size(6'1" 180lbs) and the fact that I might get bored in a year. Any comments?

A guy I met at a riding meet before once told me that new people who quickly get bored with a 250R/500R and wanting to move within a year to a more powerful bike is an accident waiting to happen. While I don't exactly agree with him, I can see his point being that it takes time to properly learn the skills needed to ride the big bikes. You WILL need the skills you learn from a small bike when you start riding the big bikes. My opinion is that its much better to learn on a small bike than a big bike, as its manageable enough to pick up the skills you'll need, rather than being on that big 600+cc bike, trying to learn the skills AND controlling the bike.

I'm 5'8" and 170 lbs and I ride the 250R no problems with a passenger (just don't take it on the highways with one, the 250 isn't really a highway bike). Whether its the 250 or the 500, my take is to choose one that you know you'll be able to control. I also would advise getting a cheap, used bike as your first bike. Never believe that your first bike will be your last. When you feel that you're ready to move up to the bigger bikes, trust me on this, you will know when. The key here is to be honest with yourself and what you can handle.
