Tappet help See Pictures
Hello everybody and thanks for the help.
I'll open and say that i do not have any experience except the willing of learning.
Recently I have purchase a 2009 klx250s which over all seems in good shape, Yesterday i have opened the cylinder head cover, to check the valve clearance and i found that the exhaust camshaft valve clearance are way off, the right one is 27mm and left is 34mm. also i found some damage on the buckets (see image) and some miner damage on the came (see image). The intake valves are ok with no damage and are in specs.
I would like to know:
1. what could have caused this damage ?
2. is this an indication of a bigger issue ?
3. do all pieces need to be changed ?
4. if so where would I purchase these items ?
thanks a lot
Jake

Howdy and welcome to the forums.
When you say "27mm and 34mm" valve clearance, I assume you meant that in hundredths of mm, as in .27 and .34?
That is out of spec for sure but I cannot imagine it causing that much damage to the buckets or cam. FWIW, I just checked the valve clearance on my new (to me) KLX and my exhaust clearances were about .30 on both sides with no discernible damage to the cam lobes or buckets.
I am sure someone much smarter than me will chime in soon but I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and bump your post since I too am curious about the explanation of your damage. (I am more of a car engine guy, not much of a moto guy)
And frankly, if you do need to replace the exhaust cam and buckets, you might get lucky and find an engine here for a few dollars. You never know.
Good luck, Jake!

That's one ugly cam, same with the buckets! I would be looking to replace them. If you either disable or remove the compression release, a move I suggest since it is unnecessary, odds are you could use a KLX300 cam if necessary. Do some research on it.
