Default Wrapping stainless steel exhaust

I've heard of rusting horror stories. I also heard somewhere that if you're going to wrap your pipes, make sure it is stainless steel. It's supposed to keep temps down, but that seems kind of the opposite of what I would expect to happen.

What's up with wrapping your exhaust?

Here is my understanding on wrapped pipes.

Hot air moves faster. Therefore, if you wrap the pipes, then it will keep the exaust gasses hotter, and will leave quicker. If you get the exhaust out quicker, then you can get the air in quicker. More air mean you increase the fuel mixture. More fuel and more air means more horsepower. This is the basic reason you wrap pipes. So yes, if you tune it correctly, you can get better power from it.

All of the exhaust wraps I've seen are of some type of fiberglass, or back in the old days, asbestos. I know some heads-up drag racers that use it, and they say it's good for an extra few hundreths to a tenth quicker on the quarter-mile. It also helps to keep the heat from soaking into the fuel system, allowing them to hot lap quicker.

In their game, that means something. Eric is right about why it works, but I'm not sure how much of an increase you'll actually get from wrapping the exhaust on the KLX. If nothing else, it will at least keep the heat away from your leg.

Me............I coat it but still wrap it, on my race car it also picked up a few hundreds but its to inconsistent to really know for sure. Due to a 10" tire.

I'm wrapping mine this winter. I'm tired of burning holes in my pants and whatever else touches it.

I did that and regretted it. Maybe its OK for a street oriented bike or car, but when you regularly get covered with mud and water, that stuff sizzles and steams in the wrapping and is a general nuisance trying to get the mud off after it is baked on. Plus, I didn't notice any difference regarding performance. Also, the pipe still got fookin hot and would still burn your pants even with the wrap on. Lastly, when I removed it, it had darkened the SS pipe on my Muzzy. So in the end, that was the one mod that I wished I had not done. Live and learn.

I don't use the wrap I use a product called a exhaust jacket fits looser and you don't have the problems of the wrap.

Like this stuff?

My headpipes are all blue and stained. Lean initial setup and I was freezing my *** off and tried to warm my hands near the pipe. A few quick touches with the gloves and it stained it pretty nicely.

Meh...it's supposed to be "an apocalypse bike" anyway. The second I get street wheels I get all foo foo with its looks.
