what price should i be charged
hey guys,
looking at my klx 250h 1999 to day, got some timing chain noises, friend and i have figured out that the timing chain tensioner needs to be replaced, on his gsx750 he was charged 30aud by the dealer for the part on his bike, rang up kawa dealer to day and theres was 140aud for my klx250 1999. i live in sydney( if that makes a difference) i thought that it very expensive, after the tapping made me go insane i though ill pay the money. if any one can tell me if that price is correct or if the have a web site that sells parts that would help allot . all prices are for the part only and in australian dollars.

If all you want to do is put more tension on the timing chain, just change the spring in the tensioner.
But, at this point you should consider changing the timing chain. They do stretch out.

Bike Bandit is selling the tensioner for $68.08 US which today converts to $104.68 AUS. Being an Ausie bike of 99 vintage I suspect you have a good few hours/kilometers on the bike. As Brewster suggests a longer stronger spring might quieten things up for a while, if your a real cheap Scottish bast%$d like me you could find a bolt or screw that fits the inner diameter of the spring and the head of the bolt/screw will give you more tension, thats a quick temporary fix that is just putting of the inevitable. Your bike probably needs tensioner, chain , guides and sprockets. Dont laugh I used to work for Hyundai and they had a similar problem and we had to come up with a quick fix, we had too many vehicles VOR (vehicle off road) till they admitted and offered a fix, which was of course a longer stronger spring.

well i forked out the money as i said before for the tensioner, and the noise when away for 10k's or so and it now is annoyingly back, so one would assume that the chain has stretched out of the "serviceable" limit. when i took the old tensioner out it was almost at its outer limit again bringing me back to the though of a new cam chain/timing chain. brewster i think you are right
so my question is, is it worth it just to take it to a mechanic or sit down with the book and pull the engine apart.
and if anyone has any other ideas my ears or eyes are all yours.
