Having acknowledged that the KLX is no drag racer, it must be said that the little bike has all it takes for me to keep up with, and usually lead, a pack of buddies on much larger dual sport machines on the trails. Some of these bikes include a KLR, DR650, GS650, GS1200, & Multistrada...

Although I admit it would be nice to have a little more top speed than the KLX provides; have other street bikes in the stable for when I need to race a Yaris!

My top speed is 80mph. (90mph indicated before I installed the speedo correction thing).
I detemine top speed under the following conditions:
level road.
No head or tail wind.
Sitting up in a normal riding position.

This thread got my motivation fired up, so I pulled out my old G-Tech Pro that I bought way back in 1995. I found a nice, straight, flat piece of road and went out to do some testing.

Sadly, however, the little KLX apparently doesn't have enough torque for this thing to really sense speed because I only got one 0-60 measurement out of it, and on that run I missed third, so I was up against the limiter for a good second or more. That run was a pathetic 10.64. I think it should have pretty much matched Brian's 9.9 if the dumb thing would react.

I know it works right because I first tested it on my DR650. It ran a best of 6.06 to 60, which is still slow since I'm letting off in 1st when it picks the front end up. It also ran a best 1/4 of 14.44 @ 91.6, which can probably be improved a half a second too just by figuring out the right shift points. 1st and 2nd are right at redline (7500) but third could probably be short-shifted.

It was getting dark or I woulda gone out on my FZ1 for a few 0-60 runs. I don't dare attempt a 1/4 mile run until I find a road about a mile long, since 1/4 mile MPH will likely be in the 125-135 range.

Hey Ckahleer -- what did drilling your slide 7/64" do?

Rob

Edit: Here in Salem where I am now, it's 150' ASL, temp was about 74 deg with humidity in the 50% range.

I'm going to do the numbers again after I change tires. I figure those stock Dunlop 605's have got to be horrible for performance.

if you want faster 0-60 shift at the top of the powerband not when you hit the top revbox shift at 6500-7000 and leave the limiter for 6th

Hahaha yeah no kidding. I was on Kenda Trackmaster II's (full knobbies) for my testing. Still it was pulling the front wheel off the ground on the 1-2 shift. But I also have a 13T sprocket. Dunno if my KLX300 exhaust is worth anything.

When I get my new shifter in this week I'll have to try it again. My current one is all bent up and twisted from multiple crashes and being hammered back into shape. It's a good half inch too high which is why I'm missing gears.
