Default What is optimum cruising rpm?

What is optimum cruising rpm for my 2006 klx 250. I run about 6400 at 70 mph, is that to high for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. It has 6,200 miles and is getting 60-70 mpg depending on how much playing i do. Thanks.

That sounds about right. I run a few hundred RPMs shy of whatever speed I'm going divided by 10 in 6th gear. I do have the 351 big bore kit though. For example:

50MPH - 4500RPMs

60MPH - 5700RPMs

70MPH - 6800RMPs

Nope, your fine. Just make sure you always check your oil level (not that it will burn much -just good practice)

Realize 70 indicated is about 65 actual. I found out on mine with stock tires and gearing that the tach is actually more accurate for speed. 5k is close to 50 6k is close to 60 and in your case 6400 is close to 65.

I typically cruise at about 60 on mine which for me seems a littler less frantic with winds and engine vibration etc but that is very subjective. Around here you don't need to go fast to be safe on the highway.

When I bought it about 600 miles ago he told me he had changed the sprocket to a 38 tooth? to give it more top end speed. I have been riding on 2,3, and 4 wheels for a long time but never had a tach. or one that was street legal. Thanks for the info.

I think my 300 does 6k at a true 60 mph. It's geared 15/46

currently have about 10,000 miles...been running it at 7,000 rpm to 8,000 rpm mostly all highways....running on 5th full throttle for most uphills to maintain roughly 75 mph speeds....everything inside the engine looks great...

my valve clearance were out of spec by ~0.002 in. at around 8,600 miles....after new valve shims, it really woke up the klx....besides that and 1 spark plug change...klx is one strong reliable bike...

noticed my speed is more accurate and only off by 1~2mph with the new tires with plenty of thread...when the tires were completely bald...it was off as much at 4~5 mph...

just feel the bike, if it feels like its trying too hard or like its going to blow, slow down. these bike are pretty forgiving for the most part.

i bought it ride it...i'll maintain it and check oil levels...do regular oil changes and stainless steel oil filter cleaning....has new tires....i figure after another 10,000 miles....at 20,000 miles, i'll do chain, sprocket and brakes probably....brake pads still look fine...i do mostly all highway commutes with very minimal braking....sprockets still look almost new....after the valve adjustments, the engine runs smoother and sounds better than when it was newer....

i mentioned in other posts....after about 3,000 miles...my oil level gets closer to the bottom line on the glass...so, i do 3,000 mile oil changes instead of the recommended 7,500 miles....
