I was out and about so I did pick up some Valvoline 10W40 4-Stroke motorcycle oil to try for now. I'll look for Mobil1 4T for the next time.

I didn't know about the wet clutch thing- but that's why I joined this board when I got my KLX a couple months ago. Thanks for the info! I'm learning. :)

I am glad you took the advice. We aren't trying to be harsh but better safe than sorry. I love synthetic but as long as it's good 4 stroke oil for wet clutches your KLX will thank you for it. It's actually scary if you think about it. a tiny 1.5 quarts for both the engine and trans combined.

I use the bel-ray regular and if my shop don't have it in stock I'll use the gold spectro

Mate, I'm amazed your bike retailer didn't advise you on this especially as it's the one thing that is ultra important to the engine!
Mind you, you're probably not alone on this one. Seems to be that so many bike shops are real keen to just take the folding stuff without helping by giving basic advice to new bike buyers

I've been using the Mobil 4T stuff, but the last oil change I went to the Kawasaki dealer and got a big jug of the Kawasaki four stroke oil.

Put about 50 miles on it so far, I see no difference other than price. The Mobil 4T is like $9.00 a quart, and the kawasaki was a 5 quart jug for $17.00.

I know what I'll be using from now on :)

Now you're getting the idea, IMO. Except in the most extreme cases (Which we try to avoid in the first place.), it's of no practical consequence which motorcycle oil you use. I use the Rotella T at about $12/gallon. Works like a charm in everything. I've also tried their synthetic to see what I think. It also seems fine, though it's a bit more expensive at about $17/gallon. I've ridden a lot of bikes, for a lot of years, and a lot of miles and I just don't notice any difference from the best oil changed often, to cheap oil changed at reasonable intervals. I'm sticking w/the Rotella and 5K miles. I may change certain bikes at 3K (Single cylinders and high revving, small displacement bikes.). Something's going to have to break to convince me it makes a difference after all this time.

Yo Hokie, luv the avatar. :D

Oil thread...lol.....don't make too much of it, the klx is not exactly a performance bike and how did motorcycles get around before all these fancy oils.

I put gold spectro into my 640adv, only because the PO did and a bunch came with the bike. The klx gets castro (they call it syn but I don't think it is) because every discount & pep boys carries it......8.9k well flogged miles...no issues.
