What engine oil does everyone use?

After talking to a oil analyst tech. about a year ago about a ATV that started to use oil but didn't leak or smoke, it became clear.
Most oils do the job wellenough for most people.
Off-road vehicles need to have frequent oil changes, 50 hour intervals.
Manufactures schedules are in ideal conditions.
No filter (oil/air) catches all the dirt.
An oil change is cheap insurance, get your favorite flavor and change it today.
This ATV was burning ½ quart oil in 100 miles, no smoke, good compression, not fouling the plug, it’s been run over 2K miles burning oil, the guy has tried some snake oil lately and his consumption is down.

Correct, do not use Automobile oil unless it is FULL Synthetic. I have used Mobile 1 with the gold cap in my old WR426 for 6 years and never had an engine or clutch problem. My next oil change on the KLX will be Mobile 1. I used Kawasaki oil first oil change that I got free with the bike.
A point on ATVs, if it is an automatic and the clutch is a CVT (constant Variable Transmission) with a belt then any oil will work. I still use Mobile 1 in my Can-AM Renegade.

Motorcycle oil is a rip off just like Marine oil for boats....just get what the mfg specs....for our klx .... API SE, SF or SG.....or API SH or SJ with JASCO MA....done.
All the rest is hype....let the oil ****'s chime in ... lol

Somewhere on the interweb there is the results of a study on motor oil.
I believe it studied New York taxis but don't hold me to it.
Some they changed the oil more often.
Some less often.
And some I believe not at all.
I also remember them using a range of oil specifications. Maybe.
Result, no significant difference in performance, reliability or engine longevity.
But it doesn't stop me using the latest super duper mega oil.

I think I migh have been using a bit of license in my previous post,

You are correct cmott, most utility ATVs are CVT, the sport ATV's typically have a clutch. Defiantly look for an oil that is compatible with a wet clutch, and keep the point spread between the two numbers as small as possible for the temperature range that will be encountered, and 15-W40 has a 25 point spread, more oil per quart lubricating the parts vs 0-W40 with a 40 point spread and a lot of viscosity modifiers added to meet the two points, and less actual oil per quart.
More info on oil.

And while we are at it, oil filters.

I haven't looked to see if there is a cross to any of these filters for our bikes.

One problem with those API certs. They are all obosolete. Thats why they are remade into a motorcycle oil.
