basically you should run the lowest octane you can without having early detonation issues to get the most power
Here's a plug for 76 Unleaded Racing Gasoline but an informative and "short-ish" read.

If you think it is interesting...

Sure its interesting...but even their marketing dept states "Keep in mind that higher octane does not mean more power unless your engine is experiencing detonation." and they are trying to sell 76 High Octane fuel.

Good clean fuel is important....and again the lowest Octane you can run with your engine without detonation will yield the greatest power....thats just basic thermodynamics.

+2 to finger mullet. just make sure that you getting it from a good station (ie shell, chevron, ect.) and not water (arco, vallero (sp?). also dont get gas while or just after the stations tanks are filled, the setament at the bottom is stured around then and you get more carbon build up.

Default octane

these bikes will run on anything...but putting high octane fuel wont help really...all engines are desigined to run on certain octane levels according to compression..stick with what the manual says on whatever you drive..

Yep. That was kinda my point.

SlapDrum - 87 octane fuel is fine.
I think we all agree.

The stock CDI advance curve is perfectly suited to the lower octane fuels. You can burn the higher grade stuff, but there's not really much of a point to it.

Austrailia is a different matter on the 06/07, because their CDI has a better advance curve. There bikes can probably take advantage of higher octane fuels, though I'm not sure what they have on the 2009 model.

For what ever it may be worth, consider the sticker/tag on the right side of the rear fender which says: Use RON (Research Octane Number) 91 octane. Page # 39 of the owner manual says the Motor Octane Number plus the RON divided by 2 equals the Antiknock Index which should be a minimum rating of 87!

Confused yet?? I spent a good number of years working for Shell Oil as an Industrial/Commercial Sales Rep. out of the Wood River Refinery in Illinois. Believe me, if the fuel that you are using does not cause a knock or pinging in your engine, you are using the correct octane rating.

What do I use? .... 91 octane, 'cause I know that that is the best that any branded supplier makes available at the retail pumps and that is readily available to me? In other words, it's their best product.

Happy trails,

I've tested a multitude of fuels...and it seems in my bike, the higher the octane the better it runs. The engine is more responsive and it is more efficient, giving me a few extra miles between fill ups.

To me that is fact... I've proven it to myself time and time agian. I will never run below 91 unless I run out of gas somewhere and thats all a kind stranger has and is willing to give/sell to me. Without reserve these stock tanks hold 1.5 gallons....and thats if its out. Usually I fill up 1.3 - 1.4 gallons,...so what the hell is the difference in price going to be ?..... .25c? .... I think I'll spend it. I know we're in a recession, but come on, you can find that in the couch cushion.

I try to put SUNOCO Ultra 93 in it everytime.

Now my CR500 ran best on 92 Octane, while my 125 and 250 ran best on SUNOCO Ultra 94 (back when they had 94, now its 93)
