Talking DRZ400S to the KLX250s

What I meant about the gearing being similar, my 09 KLX250s and the 09 DRZ400sm both rev like crazy at 65 mph. I know the Kaw was turning about 6,500 rpm, but since the Suzuki doesn't have a tack, I have no way of knowing the exact rpm. I can tell you both feel like they're reving quite high for the highway at 65 mph.
If I had purchased the DRZ400s instead of the "sm", I would say the Kawasaki is superior in the off-road zone or motorcycling. The DRZ is quite a bit heavier, and the additional horsepower/torque in the dirt does not make up the difference. I would definitely choose the KLX250s because of how light it is, and how easy it is to ride on tight trails.
I changed out the original tires on my new '05 DRZ400s, (after only 50 miles), and increased the CS gearing immediately! It really needed a 6th gear also (I was always trying to shift the thing into the 6th gear that wasn't there!!!). In the trails I found it to be just too tall, heavy, and wide.... was really glad to shed the thing. I knew about the mods that could be accomplished with the KLX250s ... (including getting the cc's up into the over 340 range, now 351 with Bill Blue's latest mod.) and that was it for me! I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough! So, off to Oregon I went, ('cause they didn't sell them in California at that time). Finally a bike that would handle like I had always wanted. I'm very happy with my '07 KLX. My buddy also sold his DRZ400e and bought a KTM 250. We are both very pleased with our decisions, but then, we love the dirt.

I have to assume that PeteNFLA is mostly an asphalt rider??
Not that there's anything wrong with that!!

My dad always rags on my KLX (he rides a DRZ-400S) but I mean, his bike is just so friggin' big and heavy... I mean, he's dying to go ride the singletrack north of here now that I have proper tires and gearing, and I don't see how he can enjoy riding that tight stuff when he's on this tank. Yes it makes insane reliable power, but I just don't like something so heavy. Tall isn't a problem, but my limp-noodle self has hard enough time picking up my KLX when I drop it :-\
