A new lithium type battery is about half or less the weight of the stock piece. I dropped some weight off of mine but then you add a skid plate and radiator guards and a few other necessary items and your back about where you started.

Picking up some aftermarket handlebars will save you a pound or two.

I put in a super light lithium battery. Has the same cranking power as the original as far as I can tell but weighs nothing. What about exhaust system? does anyone have numbers on how much can be saved by ditching the original exhaust for something lighter?

It would be easier to add HP and forget the weight.

Check.

I love my KLX for what I'm using it for...long, huge, epic, adventure rides in remote places out west. However, if weight is really critical for you, another bike is the true solution. On my '06 I ditched that antique instrument panel for a Vapor...installed aftermarket pipe and ditched the heavier OEM muffler. But then...added a 3.7 gallon tank.

I think cmott426 has it. There is an amazing amount of useless crap on this bike. A side stand switch? Please! It's heavy and should be gone.... unless you find yourself crashing frequently because you've always forgot to lift your side stand up. Maybe you should look at a Prius? Take it all off, baby. Motorcycles ARE dangerous. Get used to it.
