Watch those nuts...
#12
My thanks to those of you who have weighed in on nut safety. Rest assured my spare is now in a safe place, where I hope never to have to use it.
TE, never considered silicone to hold it in place but it sounds like a good idea. Would keep it where it belongs but wonder if the torque used to remove it would make it hang wrong for the reinsertion process. Since nobody can see it with the shrouds on I guess it wouldn't matter.
MJ, the loctite idea has merit, but once the bond is broken you'd still have a loose one. I already have a habit of applying loctite to most (non engine) bolts and nuts I remove and replace based on the idea that riding a 10K RPM sewing machine will loosen a lot of stuff regardless of proper torque setting.
Saw a great show on the history channel one night about the developement of loctite and other industrial bonding agents. Seems that racing teams led the process to develope a substance that would keep stuff from falling off their race cars, which can be annoying at 200 mph. The rest of us are just the benefactors.
Nuts should be high, tight and safe. Rules to live by.
