I'd be interested to know if the KLX really does have a catalytic converter. You make a good point about exhaust temps. Somebody had pics of a stock muffler cut open once and you really couldn't see the cat. I believe the emissions are controlled by the air injection stuff. The air injection system pumps fresh air to the exhaust as it's leaving the engine. The extra oxygen mixed with the hot exhaust gasses burn up more of the un-burned fuels in the exhaust. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not an expert, that's just how I think it works.

damn that ***** . dan, you hit it right about the air injection. i havent seen an 09 muffler cut open yet and you probally wont see cutting mine anytime soon (damn smog **** california). now the question is, fmf or hmf?

Good call Rush. My "07" owners manual has the same info as your "09". Hmmmm my stock muffler is hanging on the garage wall, and my sawzall is in the basement. I better not.
