Hey guys, new poster, older lurker... kinda still new to any mods when it comes to the KLX... Got an 06 KLX250s, I want to wire in a switch to disable the lights on the bike. To be perfectly honest, any kind of MX's are illegal in our state with the exception of the DS's. There is a nice area I like to ride near my house that isn't illegal to ride, but in order to gain access in and out of the trail, I will admit the way I enter the trail is a method that is frowned upon by the local neighbors. I get confused with all the illegal dirt bikes and quads going in and out of there.. I usually get stopped by the same people on a regular basis, and I have to get off the bike, remove my helmet and explain I am fully registered blah blah blah, and they still don't get it. I've even offered to stay while they call local law enforcement... I would like to draw less attention to myself when exiting the trail.... and then when I get back on the street flip my lights back on so I can avoid future issues as much as possible. I still have my stock exhaust so that I do not draw attention with the bike being loud etc. I live in more of a city setting, so local trails are scarce, unless I want to ride like an hour out to Thomaston or something like that... not very convienent when I want to go for a rip after getting out of an 8 hour work day.... I understand some of you guys might frown upon this, and I understand the reasons why some of you would. This is the reason I bought my KLX250s, to draw less attention to myself, and keep it legal... I really miss riding my 2 stroke, but it's impossible out here to ride it anywhere, and by no means is it quiet. At least on the KDX I can kill the light.

You can just pull either of the wires going to the bulb (power not earth.) Then when you switch to low beam the headlight will be off (if you pulled the low beam) and flick to high beam for on. Sorry no help on the brake light and rear light. You get the idea.

 

There should be two red wires crimped together on your ignition switch. One brances-off to the headlight and the other is power coming from the fuse pack in the back of the bike under the seat. This power eventually goes throught the ignition switch contacts and to the tail light. The red wire coming from the fuse pack is the one you want to wire the switch into. That will kill both head and tail lights, but nothing else.

so .... why do you want to kill the lights?

 

From what I can gather, he want's to stealthily slip into areas he's not supposed to ride at, then turn the lights back on when he exits and hits the pavement. Is it really getting that hard to find places the ride at?

 

jordan, why not go low tech? You've already mentioned that you're legal, just want a more stealthy ingress/egress. Seems to me that a couple of cheap caps wouldn't take to much effort to fab and would go on and come off quickly. Sometimes simple is good.
